We’re always being pulled forward by something, whether by time or tasks, or desires and hopes. Our lives are urged forward, and it’s happening all the time. A New Year's symbolic energy or a birthday provides an intersection between what was, what is, and what we hope will be. With a fresh start comes a fresh perspective, and after this year, it's needed more than ever.
Bye, Bye 2020...
We've been eager to close the book on 2020, and that’s fair. We may want to leave 2020 behind, but its confrontations, challenges and disappointments, as well as its opportunities and paradigm-shifting realities, will stay with us.
We’ll need this awareness and resilience as turning the calendar page doesn’t erase the story that we’ll need to write in the days ahead.
So, what's pulling us forward in 2021? What's compelling us? As we move into the new year, we set our GPS for the days ahead by considering what we’re proud of, what we've learned, what we’re grateful for and what we desire more. This awareness is the foundation for the choices we'll make. We're energized and mobilized by what we want to create and the feelings we crave. We must be compelled by what's possible, rather than just wanting to escape this past year.
“The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control. Where then do I look for good and evil? Not to uncontrollable externals, but within myself to the choices that are my own . . .”~ Epictetus
None of us knows what will come, but we can resolve to love, create, connect, laugh and learn. We can resolve to be compassionate, caring and committed. We can resolve to bring with us the beautiful moments and poignancies from 2020.
Of course, the external world impacts us, but let's resolve to respond and make choices that compels the best in us and creates the best outcomes for us personally and collectively.
I wish you a Happy New Year and brighter days ahead.
